Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is a French commune, situated in the département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The territory of the commune was densely occupied in antiquity. Its favourable position on the banks of the Durance and on a well-travelled road prompted the establishment of a castle, named after one of its first lords.
A little history
Well situated in the valley of the Durance, the territory of the commune was densely occupied during antiquity. Its territory formed part of that of the Sogiontiques (Sogiontii), whose territory extended from the south of the Baronnies to the Durance. The Sogiontiques were federated to the Voconces, and after the Roman conquest they were attached along with them to the Roman province of Narbonnaise. In the 2nd century, they were detached from the Voconces and formed a distinct civitas, with Segustero (Sisteron) as its capital.
