Forcalquier (in Provençal Occitan, Forcauquier or Fourcauquié) is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Founded in the 11th century, then the capital of a flourishing county of Provence, nicknamed the "Cité comtale", it is today the chief town of an arrondissement. Its inhabitants are called the Forcalquiérens and Forcalquiérennes.
A little history
The earliest traces of human life at Forcalquier date from the 3rd millennium BC, that is to say from the Neolithic period. In 1991, a Bell Beaker was discovered in the quarter of La Fare, with ceramic goblets in the typical bell shape found in a burial. In the Iron Age, people settled on the heights, in the oppida.
