Its inhabitants are known as the Vitréens and the Vitréennes. The town had 19,365 inhabitants in 2023, making it the 13th largest town in the région and the 549th in France in 2022.
A little history
The site of Vitré has been occupied since the Neolithic period. Less than one kilometre from the urban area, on the commune of Pocé-les-Bois, stands the menhir known as the Pierre Blanche. Two kilometres to the east of the town, the INRAP carried out excavations in 2007 and 2008 on a settlement site dated to the second Iron Age. It was occupied from the end of the 5th century to the 1st century BC.
