It is ahead of Bruz (19,683 inhabitants) and Vitré (19,365 inhabitants).
A little history
The presence of megalithic monuments, particularly in the forêt de Fougères, suggests that the area was already inhabited during the Neolithic period. In the Middle Ages, the town became a centre of tanning and cloth-making. Originally, the château de Fougères consisted of a wooden keep occupying the highest point of the site. The wooden enclosure was replaced from the 13th century onwards by a stone wall.
