Villeneuve-lès-Avignon or Villeneuve-lez-Avignon is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Gard, in the Occitanie region. The town borders Avignon and is part of the Grand Avignon. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Rhône, the bras de Villeneuve and by another watercourse.
A little history
The arms of the town are, party, in 1 azure with three fleurs de lys, which is of France. In two, gules with a saltire or, which is of the abbaye Saint-André, the two co-lords of the town since the act of paréage of 1292. The oldest anthropic traces date from the end of the Neolithic period. These are dwellings and burial sites found in the quartier du Polygone, on the colline du Cabrion. At Angles, the rocher de la Justice served as the location of an oppidum during the Chalcolithic period, an oppidum reorganised during the protohistoric period. Other discoveries dating from the same era have been made on the territory of the commune and in the surrounding area.
