Uzès [yzɛs] (Usès in Provençal Occitan, according to the classical standard) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Gard, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by Les Seynes, the Alzon and by Les Rosselles. Included in the gorges du Gardon, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of a natural zone of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The development of the city of Uzès, from the 1st century BCE, predates the construction of the pont du Gard, which brought water from the fontaine d'Eure as far as Nîmes and whose construction dates back to the 1st century CE. The limestone plateau on which Uzès stands was already occupied around the 5th century BCE, probably by an oppidum that accommodated the future city. One of the peripheral districts of the city of Ucetia was uncovered to the north of the medieval centre in 2017.
