Bagnols-sur-Cèze is a French commune situated in the north-east of the Gard département, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Cèze and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (la Cèze et ses gorges) and three natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The human groups who populated the region of Bagnols during Antiquity had close relations with the Greeks of Marseille. From the Middle Ages to the 1950s, Bagnols was a small urban centre with influence over the lower valley of the Cèze, at the crossroads of the Cèze valley and the road from Lyon to the Midi along the right bank of the Rhône. The creation of the centre d'études nucléaires de Marcoule, launched in 1954, caused it to make a rapid leap into modernity, tripling its population and transforming the urban landscape in a spectacular fashion. Since the 1970s, the growth of the town has returned to a more moderate pace, but Bagnols and the Gard rhodanien have managed to retain a real economic dynamism.
