It is situated in the north of the département, within the aire d'attraction of Toulouse, on the borders with Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays Montalbanais, a territory at the boundaries of the former provinces of Rouergue, Guyenne and Languedoc, corresponding to the southern part of the Bas Quercy.

A little history

The town of Villemur-sur-Tarn was founded more than a thousand years ago on a site favourable to defence. It is so remarkably laid out that this stronghold shares, with the Mont-Saint-Michel, the distinction of never having been taken, notably by the English who, at the time of the Hundred Years War, occupied the whole of the west and south-west of France. To begin with, its natural defences consisted of the wide moat formed by the river and two ravines that opened onto the right bank.
