Villefranche-de-Lauragais is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Lauragais, the former "Pays de Cocagne", linked both to the cultivation of pastel and to the abundance of its produce, and to the "grenier à blé du Languedoc". Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Hers-Mort, the Grasse, the Marès, the ruisseau de Favayrol, the ruisseau des Barelles and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
A bastide founded in the 13th century in 1267 by Alphonse de Poitiers, comte de Toulouse. In 1280, Philippe le Bel granted it a new charter of privileges. It was devastated in 1355 by Édouard de Woodstock, nicknamed le Prince noir, during his terrible chevauchée launched from English Aquitaine. The bastide of Villefranche, founded on land well suited to agriculture (cereals) and livestock farming (cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry), rose to prominence in the 16th century at the expense of its neighbour Avignonet-Lauragais.
