Vierzon is a French commune situated in the département of Cher in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Arnon, the canal de Berry, the Cher, the Yèvre, the Barangeon, the Verdin and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage comprising one Natura 2000 site and two natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
A former prehistoric settlement at Bellon (a district situated to the south of the Cher), with a flint-knapping workshop, Vierzon is probably one of the twenty towns destroyed by Vercingétorix during the siege of Avaricum by César. After the conquest, it was probably a Gallo-Roman oppidum, a defensive point at the western entrance to the Berry, established on a hillock (this time on the other bank of the Cher), facing south, overlooking the confluence of the Yèvre and the Cher and protected by the forest and the Sologne to the north. A château was built there during the Merovingian period. In 903 the abbaye Saint-Pierre was built by Benedictine monks, on the site of the present-day Hôtel-de-Ville.
