Saint-Martin-d'Auxigny is a French commune, situated in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to a degraded oceanic climate, it is drained by the Barangeon, the Moulon, the Mouline, the Auxigny, the Poisson and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of one Natura 2000 site and two natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The ancient Auxigniacum, Auxigny, is said to have been, in the 9th century, at the time of the Norman invasions, one of the stopping places where the body of saint Martin rested (hence the place name, Sanctus Martinus de Axigniaco, attested in 1163). Part of the French royal domain, the locality saw, around 1150, Louis VII build the château de la Salle-le-Roi, which overlooked the site of the present-day pond. Reinforced by Philippe-Auguste and Louis XI, it became a hunting residence for the kings of France until it was destroyed in October 1589 during the Wars of Religion.
