The inhabitants of Méreau are called the Marologiens. According to Monsieur Fontaine, the commune was made up of Gauls, with "Maros" meaning "grand" and "ialo" meaning "fields, clearing". In 600, the commune was called MEREENSIS. Then, in 843, it was named MAROLOGIUM.
