Exposée à un climat méditerranéen, elle est drainée par le Luech, le Rieutort, l'Homol, la Vérié, le ruisseau de Gourdouse et par divers autres petits cours d'eau. Incluse dans les Cévennes, la commune possède un patrimoine naturel remarquable, quatre sites Natura 2000 (le « mont Lozère », les « vallées du Tarn, du Tarnon et de la Mimente », les « hautes vallées de la Cèze et du Luech » et « les Cévennes ») et cinq zones naturelles d'intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.
