Mende (pronounced [mɑ̃d]) is a French commune, the prefecture of the département of Lozère in the région of Occitanie. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The town, whose earliest traces of habitation date back to 200 BC, was originally named Mimata, doubtless in reference to the mountains surrounding it. However, inhabitants may have been living here well before that. Indeed, on the mont Mimat, at Chapieu, a dolmen was discovered around 1913 containing, among other things, a trepanned skull.
