Vanves covers 1.6 km², lies between 35 and 78 m above sea level and had 28,622 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Vanvéenne.
Vanves is a French commune in the département of Hauts-de-Seine in the Île-de-France region. The commune is situated to the south-west of Paris, bordering its 15th arrondissement.
A little history
In 1999, archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of Gallo-Roman baths from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, in the rue Gaudray. It is not known whether this was a suburban sanctuary of Lutèce, a villa, or whether there existed at the time on the site of Vanves a vicus (secondary settlement). This village appears in a document of 1163 as belonging to the abbaye Sainte-Geneviève de Paris. In 1247, the inhabitants were granted their freedom by the abbot. The église Saint-Rémy (place de la République in the lower part of Vanves) dates from 1419.
