Valognes covers 15.6 km², lies between 19 and 87 m above sea level and had 6,969 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Valognes is a French commune situated in the département de la Manche in Normandy, with a population of 6,969 inhabitants. From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, the town was the administrative capital of the Cotentin, a royal town and legal centre bringing together many offices that were contested by the local nobility. From the reign of Louis XIV, fashion, with Versailles and court life, encouraged the nobility to settle in the town, and it was in Valognes that this developed, with the construction of numerous hôtels particuliers, which earned it the nickname of "Versailles normand".
A little history
Excavations carried out at the lieu-dit La Victoire, notably on the site of the current Leclerc shopping centre, have uncovered evidence of Gaulish occupation. The former Gallo-Roman city of Alauna, close to the modern town of Valognes, was founded in the Augustan period. With an estimated area of around 45 ha, it was perhaps the chef-lieu de civitas under the Early Roman Empire. It was in all likelihood abandoned in the 3rd century.
