Saint-Pair-sur-Mer is a French commune situated in the département of Manche in the Normandie region, with a population of 4,507 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest coastal settlements on the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, and experienced significant Scandinavian colonisation in the 10th century before becoming, in 1022, one of the estates of the monks of Mont-Saint-Michel, who brought it prosperity. Since the mid-19th century, Saint-Pair has been a seaside resort that has managed to preserve its mediaeval heritage.
A little history
The site of the present-day Saint-Pair was in all likelihood occupied since the Gaulish era, and the settlement, which at that time bore the name of Sessiac, was organised around a fanum and a tidal harbour. The inhabitants of the locality lived from fishing and trade with the Norman islands and the west of Great Britain, as well as from agricultural activities carried out in the surrounding area. During the conquest of Gaul in 52 BC, Sessiac, like the whole of the bay, was Romanised.
