Coutances is a sub-prefecture, the seat of the Cour d'assises de la Manche and that of the évêché de Coutances et Avranches.
A little history
Excavations carried out at the lieu-dit Le Petit Vaudôme uncovered evidence of Gaulish occupation. As the chief town of the Celtic people of the Unelles, the city of Cosedia took the name Constantia in the 3rd century under the reign of the emperor Constance Chlore, to whom the first fortifications are attributed, in 296, within the framework of the Litus Saxonicum. As tetrarch between 292 and 306, Constance Chlore was entrusted with the government of the Gauls. The city, seat of the diocese of Coutances, was also the seat of the legion Prima Flavia Gallicana Constantia (first Flavian legion).
