From the Middle Ages until the 18th century, the town was the administrative capital of the Cotentin, a royal town and legal centre bringing together many offices that were contested by the local nobility. From the reign of Louis XIV, fashion, with Versailles and court life, encouraged the nobility to settle in the town, and it was in Valognes that this developed, with the construction of numerous hôtels particuliers, which earned it the nickname of "Versailles normand".
