Uchaud is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Gard, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vieux Vistre. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the « costières nîmoises ») and a natural zone of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The Via Domitia, a great Roman road allowing travellers to reach the Iberian peninsula from Rome and passing through Nîmes, crosses the commune. The three milestone markers that punctuate it attest to this, as does the name of the village. It comes from the corruption of the inscription engraved on the milestone of Antonin-le-Pieux, which can still be seen in place at the edge of the voie Domitienne on which the departmental road was built, «AD OCTAVUM LAPIDEM», "at the eighth stone", meaning it indicates a distance of eight thousand paces (11.824 km) from the Porte d'Auguste in Nîmes, following the Via Domitia. Octavum gradually transformed into "Uchaud".
