Tourrettes-sur-Loup (Tourretto-sus-Loup in Provençal) is a French commune situated in the département of Alpes-Maritimes, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It bore the name Tourrettes-lès-Vence from the 16th century until 1894. Its inhabitants are called les Tourrettans.
A little history
Although it was long thought that the name Tourrettes derived from the Latin "Turris Alta" (elevated observation point), it would appear that it actually derives from the Ligurian word *TOR (a mountain ledge), as evidenced by the numerous place names Tourrettes found throughout the region. The territory of Tourrettes-sur-Loup is rich in prehistoric and protohistoric sites, with 17 having been recorded there. Indeed, from the Middle Palaeolithic period, the site of the grotte de la Baume Obscure and, above all, that of the abri de Pié Lombard were frequented. The Palaeolithic occupation of Pié-Lombard, dated to approximately 70,000 years ago, also yielded some remains of Neanderthal man.
