A little history
A commune under the guardianship of the counts of Vintimille during the Middle Ages, Sospel asserted its independence very early against the claims of the counts, who were compelled to pledge allegiance to the republic of Gênes, which had designs on the region. Sospel therefore sought the protection of the count of Provence, the only counterweight to Genoese hegemony. On 28 March 1258, the cession of Sospel to Provence became effective. As the chief town of a viguerie, Sospel grew in administrative importance.
