Sommières covers 10.4 km², lies between 19 and 106 m above sea level and had 5,073 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Sommières (Someire in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south of the Gard département, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vidourle, the Bénovie, the ruisseau des Corbières and two other watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (le Vidourle) and five natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The oldest traces of settlement near Sommières are found at Fontbouïsse (commune of Villevieille), the eponymous site of a civilisation from the Copper Age (2,400 years before our era). A proto-historic oppidum developed around 500 BC on the plateau of Villevieille. Abandoned probably around 350 BC, it was replaced, at the time of the Roman colonisation of southern Gaul (125–118 BC), by a Gallo-Roman settlement. The Terriers quarter in Villevieille retains the remains of several Gallo-Roman houses.
