Sochaux, in Franc-Comtois Soûetchâ, is a French commune situated in the département of Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The commune, which was initially no more than a village until the early twentieth century, experienced very significant growth from 1912 onwards with the establishment of a factory belonging to the société des Automobiles Peugeot, which would become the largest industrial site in France, employing up to 40,000 workers in the 1970s. The musée de l'Aventure Peugeot traces this history.
A little history
Nothing remains of the first hovels from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in Sochaux. Little information has come down to us about Sochaux in the Middle Ages. The village of Souchy is found only in an official text dated 1189, dealing with the dues that inhabitants were required to pay to the abbaye Notre-Dame de Belchamp near Sochaux. Sochaux was at that time merely a community dependent on the comtes de Montbéliard, who were vassals of the Germanic Empire.
