Senonches is a French commune situated in the département of Eure-et-Loir in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Blaise, the Gervaine, the ruisseau de Saint-Cyr, the Vallée le Vau, the fossé 06 de la commune de Senonches and various other small watercourses. Included in the parc naturel régional du Perche, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two Natura 2000 sites and six natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
There are no remains older than the Middle Ages. The morphology of the village with its central street, as well as the loop of the hamlet of Laudigerie, are reminiscent of the clearance settlements so significant in the 11th century. The first fortifications were made of earth and are still visible today beside the rue de l'École (parc de la pomme de Pin) and beneath the ramparts of the château. A remnant of a rampart is still visible in the rue de Pontgouin. A Chartres gate joined to an old tower of the manoir de Launay is presumed to have stood there. This strategic elevated point had the role of defending the dyke leading to the centre of the village and was watched over by the tower of the château.
