Sauve is a French commune situated in the centre of the Gard département in the Occitanie region. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of four natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The first significant human occupation is an oppidum from the Gaulish and Roman periods. The oppidum de Mus is situated 2.5 km to the north of the present village. The earliest mentions of the town of Sauve are later. According to the works consulted, the castrum of Sauve is cited for the first time in 898 or some sixty years later, in 959. The bibliography does however agree in placing the first settlement in the upper area of Sauve, at the level of the mer des Rochers. The settlement then became established in the lower area, on the present site, from the beginning of the 11th century.
