Sancoins covers 53.5 km², lies between 192 and 233 m above sea level and had 2,951 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Sancoins is a French commune situated in the Cher department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the canal de Berry, the Aubois, the Arcueil, the ruisseau du Pont rouge and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Sancoins was the chief town of its district from 1790 to 1795, grouping together the cantons of Dun-le-Roi, La Guerche-sur-l'Aubois, Nérondes, Ourouer-les-Bourdelins and Sancoins. At the time of the collapse of the Spanish republic, which brought about the Retirada, significant arrivals of Spanish refugees took place. Between 30 January and 9 February 1939, 3,002 Spanish refugees fleeing before the troops of Franco arrived in the Cher. They were transported in four convoys to the gare de Bourges.
