Salies-du-Salat (Occitan, Salias de Salat), pronounced [salis dy salat], is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne spread across the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Salat and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
The history of the town is linked to its salt spring and also to its Roman thermal baths, which are still in operation. These include counter-current pools used by those attending spa treatments. From 1866 to 1969, the commune benefited from a passenger station on the line from Boussens to Saint-Girons. In 1945, a housing camp for Polish families was present there, accommodating 102 people. On 23 June 1958, the commune, previously named Salies, became Salies-du-Salat.
