Saint-Rémy, or Saint-Rémy-sur-Orne, is a French commune situated in the département of Calvados in the Normandie region, with a population of 996 inhabitants.
A little history
Saint-Rémy (sur Orne) resulted from the merger of two communes in 1827, Saint-Rémy and La Mousse. Iron ore was extracted in open-cast mining on the hills of Beaumont and Mont de Vêpre from 1460. However, true mining operations began on 28 September 1875 with the agreement by decree of the President of the Republic Patrice de Mac Mahon, granting the mineral concession to the société des Mines de Fer. From late October 1939 to August 1940, Saint-Rémy-sur-Orne took in refugees from Volmerange-les-Mines and Ottange, villages in the Moselle area situated between the Maginot Line and the Luxembourg border.
