Hérouville-Saint-Clair is a French commune situated in the département of Calvados in the Normandie region, with a population of 23,470 inhabitants (the Hérouvillais). A village on the outskirts of Caen named Hérouville until 1957, it saw the construction of a new town on its territory during the 1960s, leading to its population multiplying by 13 in twenty years. It became the second largest town in the département by the end of the 20th century, a ranking contested with Lisieux following a slowdown in demographic growth during the 2000s.
A little history
It is worth highlighting the lack of archaeological research on the commune's site during the period of its expansion, which led to an almost total absence of archaeological investigation on two sites of Gallo-Roman occupation (in the archaeological sense) that could have proved promising. At the villa de Lébisey, a discovery most probably made by chance of a building of around 800 m² took place in 1835 by a member of the société des antiquaires de Normandie, M. de Magneville, near the bois de Lébisey.
