Cabourg is a French commune situated in the Calvados department, in the Normandie region. A holiday retreat for Marcel Proust, who loved to stay in "his" Grand Hôtel, the commune is an important seaside resort on the English Channel and was a meeting place for the upper bourgeoisie of Europe, principally French, English, Belgian, Swiss and Russian, during the Belle Époque and the interwar period. Its seafront became lined with hotels during the 1920s.
A little history
In 1793, Cabourg had a recorded population of only 165 inhabitants. The village was developing primarily close to the Dives, to the north of its confluence with the Divette. Housing was organised around two axes, one parallel to the river and the other to the south of the road from Caen to Dives, with the church standing slightly apart to the south-west. The dunes to the north of the commune were uninhabited.
