A little history
Deauville and its marshes left few traces in history before the creation of the seaside resort. The village was built on the heights of mont Canisy, a prebend of the bishopric of Lisieux during the Ancien Régime. Activity was agricultural, consisting of livestock farming and arable farming, notably of sainfoin. On the heights, a little away from the village, just at the current boundary between Deauville and Saint-Arnoult on the grounds of the current New Golf, the ruins of the château de Lassay were visible until quite recently, described by the historian and archaeologist Arcisse de Caumont, who states that it was still almost entirely intact in 1830.
