A little history
In antiquity, a Celto-Ligurian oppidum existed here, known today as the oppidum de Saint-Blaise. The Etruscans established a trading post there. The founding of Saint-Mitre, or at least that of the Castrum Sancti Mitrii (the fortified castle of Saint-Mitre), dates back to the time when the neighbouring town of Ugium (today Saint-Blaise) was sacked by Saracen troops, probably around the 9th century. It was at that time most likely a simple wooden tower, of which no remains survive. One must wait until the 12th century for the Castrum de Saint-Mitre to be mentioned, and until the 13th century for a more solid stone castle to be built, which was then the property of the Archbishop of Arles.
