Saint-Martory, the town
Saint-Martory covers 8.3 km², lies between 269 and 485 m above sea level and had 1,027 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saint-Martory is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne spanning the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the canal de Saint-Martory and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The grotte de la Tourasse, sometimes called the grotte de Montpezat as it is situated almost directly below the former château de Montpezat to the north-east of the town, at the lieu-dit la Tourasse. In 1872 Gabriel de Mortillet chose this site to characterise a stratigraphic stage, the Tourassien, between the Magdalenian and the Neolithic. This stage has today fallen into disuse in favour of the term Azilian. The stratigraphy of this site includes Magdalenian levels, a level which according to Huot (1985) is either a Magdalenian/Azilian mixture or a genuine transitional period, though Barbaza (1997) attributes it to the Laborian, a level of early Azilian, a level of Azilian, and several levels of Sauveterrian.
