Saint-Martin-de-Crau is a French commune situated in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Martinois or the Cravens. Created by detachment from the commune of Arles in 1925 and endowed with an area of 214.87 km2, Saint-Martin-de-Crau is the thirteenth largest commune in metropolitan France (Insee data), the fourth in Bouches-du-Rhône, after Arles, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Marseille.
A little history
In the 1990s, the archaeologist Otello Badan carried out a systematic survey of the plain of la Crau and discovered there an impressive number of remains indicating a human presence dating back to at least the 1st century BC. This discovery is located in the vicinity of present-day Saint-Martin, at Entressen, which appears to have played the role of a mutatio in Roman times. However, the earliest traces of human activity in the region must be traced back even further.
