Saint-Marcellin-en-Forez [sɛ̃ maʁs(ə)lɛ̃ ɑ̃ fɔʁɛ], abbreviated locally as Saint-Marcellin (Sant-Marcelyin or Sant-Marcelin in Arpitan and Sant-Marcelhin in Occitan), is a French commune situated in the Forez region, more precisely in the south of the département of Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and it forms part of Loire Forez Agglomération.
A little history
Before 984, the commune was probably inhabited, if the discovery of coins dating from the 4th century is to be believed. 984 marks the oldest known traces of the commune of Saint-Marcellin-en-Forez. In the 13th century (before 1225), the initial construction of the church took place. It underwent many modifications over time, such as the addition of a Gothic-style bell tower within a Romanesque church. In 1286, the first mention of the town ramparts was recorded.
