Saint-Lys (pronounced [sɛ̃ lis], Sent Lis in Gascon) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in Gascogne toulousaine, and in the Pays toulousain in terms of natural region, which extends around Toulouse along the valley of the Garonne, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre.
A little history
This bastide was founded by paréage between the representative of the King of France, Eustache de Beaumarchès, and the abbey of Planselve, at Gimont, which owned the lands of the grange d'Eaubelle. The bastide remained a modest small town, chef-lieu de canton, until the 19th century, when it was served by the railway line linking Toulouse to Boulogne-sur-Gesse, today dismantled. On 12 June 1944, towards the end of the Second World War, units of the IIe panzerdivision SS « Das Reich » killed nine maquisards and executed twelve civilians at Saint-Lys, Bonrepos-sur-Aussonnelle and Saiguède.
