As far back as Prehistory, in the Palaeolithic period, the valley appears to have attracted the earliest humans. A few traces attest to this, such as objects and tools made of knapped stone found in the sand pits of La Leu and at Les Caves. More recently, nearly five thousand years ago, during the Neolithic period, the people of the polished stone age erected dolmens such as that of the prairie du Ménillet near Dampierre-sur-Avre. This stone table, the Pierre-au-bout, resting on three supports, is slightly tilted lengthways. It measures approximately 4.40 m by 2.50 m and nearly 1 m in thickness.
