A little history
The territory of the commune forms part of that of the Gaulish tribe of the Voconces. A hoard of 350 Gaulish silver coins of the type known as «au cavalier», minted in the Rhône valley between 75 and 51 BCE, was discovered at Saint-Jean-en-Royans in 1856. There was a Roman presence. The commune of Saint-Jean-en-Royans grew out of a priory founded in the year one thousand on the site of the present presbytery and church.
