Nyons [njɔ̃s] (in Occitan Niòns or Nioun) is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département of the Drôme in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are known as the Nyonsais.
A little history
The region of Nyons fell, in the Celtic period, within the area of the Gaulish tribe of the Voconces. In the Gallo-Roman period, the region is considered to have formed part of the civitas of Vaison. André Chastagnol considered, on the basis of a text by Ptolemy, that Nyons may have been the capital of the Tricastins (their capital is today located at Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux). Nyons is often identified with the vicus of the Noiomagenses mentioned in an inscription at Tain.
