A little history
The place name "Bonnefonds" means "bonne source". The presbytery of the church features a fragment of a Roman wall. Excavations carried out during the construction of the hospital in 1966 at the Colombier uncovered the remains of a Gaulish and then Gallo-Roman occupation of the site, including a circular Gaulish or Gallo-Roman kiln, a tile kiln and a Roman spillway, a basin and a water reserve. The mention in a deed of donation of 868 of the église Saint-Jean ("in Garensi ecclesiam in honore Sancti Johannis") most likely corresponds to Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds and provides its first known written mention in the Jarez.
