Saint-Hippolyte, the town

Saint-Hippolyte covers 11 km², lies between 360 and 760 m above sea level and had 981 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Saint-Hippolyte is a French commune situated in the département of Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Hippolytains and Saint-Hippolytaines.

A little history

A very ancient settlement, the first inhabitants established themselves at the foot of the grotte de la Roche. Originally this region, notable for its exemption from serfdom and mainmorte, refers to the first ranges of the Jura. The region of Franche-Montagne lay between the valleys of the Doubs and the Dessoubre, on the borders of the former bishopric of Bâle, encompassing the lordships of Maîche, Trévillers, Franquemont, Saint-Julien, Réaumont, Châtelneuf-en-Vennes, Vennes and Châtillon-sous-Maîche. From the beginning of the 14th century this region was reduced to the communes of the canton of Maîche, including a few from that of Saint-Hippolyte and du Russey.
