Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, in Occitan Sant Ipolit del Fòrt, is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Gard, in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vidourle, the Alzon, the Argentesse, the ruisseau de Valestalière and by two other watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the gorges de Rieutord, Fage et Cagnasse) and five natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The town was very prosperous from the 18th century to the 19th century thanks to the silk industry and tanneries. It housed a military school for soldiers' children from 1886 to 1934 and a Protestant institution for the deaf created in 1856 which persists to this day, under the name of CROP-Association Paul-Bouvier. It was the chef-lieu of a district from 1790 to 1795, when districts were abolished.
