Saint-Hilaire-de-Brethmas [sɛ̃.t‿ilɛʁ də bʁɛtmas] is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Gard in the région of Occitanie. An urban commune within the agglomeration of Alès, it has 4,670 inhabitants as of 2023, having experienced a sharp rise in population since 1962. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Hilairois or Saint-Hilairoises.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, Saint-Hilaire de Brethmas formed part, along with Vézénobres and Montèze, of the marquisat de Montmoyrac, whose titleholders were the De Serinhac, members of the militia of the Temple, and after their elimination, the De Maubuisson, the Du Puy de Cendras, the de Tremolet de Robiac, and then the Demstrex. It was at Saint-Hilaire de Brethmas that, on 12 May 1704, at the pont d'Avène, the first direct negotiations took place between Jean Cavalier, initially the most prominent Camisard leader, and the marquis de La Lande, acting on behalf of the maréchal de Villars. These negotiations continued until a peace was granted by Louis XIV, in a text that reached Nîmes on 27 May.
