Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Rhône, the canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc, the canal du Rhône à Sète, the ruisseau de l'Agau, the Valat des Grottes and the Valladas de Sainte-Colombe.
A little history
Saint-Gilles is without doubt the Pons Aerarium of the Itinéraire de Bordeaux à Jérusalem (333 AD), 12 miles from Nîmes and 8 miles from Arles. It is the terminus of the Voie Régordane, a road descending from the Massif central and the Cévennes. Today on the edge of the Camargue, Saint-Gilles was formerly a port used by merchants, pilgrims and crusaders.
