Saint-Geniès-de-Malgoirès [sɛ̃ ʒənjɛs də malɡwaʁɛs] is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Gard, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Esquielle, the ruisseau de l'Auriol, the Rouvégade and by two other watercourses. Included in the gorges du Gardon, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of four natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The name of the village evolved over the centuries, Sanctus-Genesius-de-Mediogozes in the 12th century, Saint Geniès de Malgoires in the 16th century, Mont-Esquielle under the Revolution. In 1790, Saint-Geniès had (with 167 votes out of 176) the first person of African descent elected mayor of a French commune, Louis Guizot. His federalist and Girondin positions sent him to the guillotine on 3 July 1794 in Nîmes. On 4 December 1815, a seditious gathering freed an individual from prison who was wearing buttons with an eagle on them, whilst another group jeered at national guardsmen who were crying Vive le roi!
