Saint-Genest-Lerpt [sɛ̃ ʒənɛ lɛʁ] is a French commune situated in the département of the Loire in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. A town bordering the city of Saint-Étienne, it was a cradle of ribbon-making, home to numerous passementiers. It is today a residential town in the suburbs of Saint-Étienne.
A little history
In 1085, the dean of the chapter of the Église Métropolitaine de Lyon, named Blandin, donated his land of Saint-Genest-Lerpt to that chapter. The first concern of the Canons, upon taking possession of an inhabited territory, was to build a church there and to establish a religious congregation. Saint-Genest-Lerpt ("Saint-Genis") is mentioned in 1173 in the exchange carried out at the time of the separation of the counties of the Lyonnais and the Forez. Following this act, Saint-Genest formed part of an enclave directly dependent on the chapter of Lyon, on the borders of the Jarez and the Forez, and was finally returned to the Forez in 1278.
