Saint-Gaudens (pronounced [sɛ̃godɛ̃ːs]), Sent Gaudenç in Occitan, is a French commune situated in the west of the département of Haute-Garonne, of which it is a sub-prefecture, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies in the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne situated across the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the canal d'Auné, the Jô, the Lanedon, the Soumès, the Canal de Camon, the ruisseau de la Garrie and various other small watercourses.
A little history
In antiquity, a Roman road linking Toulouse to Dax passed close to the current site of the town, where a rural estate was located. In 475 the place received the burial of a martyr, Gaudens, a young boy beheaded by the Visigoths. A religious community was then established in his name. A church and a monastery were built around the 8th century, with the religious following the rules of life of saint Chrodegand.
