Saint-Chaffrey (in Alpine Occitan Sant Chafrèi [sã tʃaˈfʁɛj]) is a French commune situated in the département of Hautes-Alpes in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The main departure point for the Serre Chevalier Vallée winter sports resort is located within the commune. It is one of the five communes forming the suburban area of the unité urbaine de Briançon.
A little history
The village is listed in the inventory of the communautés de commune of the Briançonnais in the Charte de 1343 as Sanctus Theofredus (which gave Saint Théoffrey, then Tchoffrey and finally Chaffrey). On 20 June 1940, several shells fired by the Italian fort of Mont Chaberton fell on the village. One of them struck a chapel situated on the Traverse de l'Ange Gardien.
