Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Cèze and by various other small watercourses. Included within the Cévennes, the commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, two Natura 2000 sites (the « hautes vallées de la Cèze et du Luech » and « la Cèze et ses gorges ») and two natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Saint-Ambroix is a historic town, and the Celts and Romans left traces of their presence there. A fortified town in the Middle Ages, it subsequently developed commercially and industrially (the silk industry in the 19th century). Remarkable and mysterious on account of its rocher du Dugas, its archaeological excavations, its troglodyte dwellings, the ruins of its château, its tour Guisquet, its legend of the Vòlo-Biòu (the flying ox), and above all its human sacrifice altar dating from the Celtic period, which makes this town unique. During the French Revolution, the commune temporarily bore the name of Pont-Cèze.
